App usage

If your entry isn't sending and you see "Something went wrong" with a "Try again" button, try these steps:

  • Go to Help inside the app, click the first question, and follow the steps
  • Check your internet connection — a stable connection is crucial
  • Log out and back in from the "You" section (person icon, top right)
  • Try recording the next day — this sometimes resolves the issue automatically
  • Pull down to refresh the journal
  • Still stuck? Use the three-dot menu and send feedback — we'll fix it fast

We regularly test speech recognition models to improve your experience. If transcription quality isn't great, try these:

  • Give negative feedback and select "Poor speech-to-text quality"
  • Edit the note manually
  • Persistent issues? Contact us and we'll look into it

If the AI misrecognizes a name, try the following:

  • Give feedback by selecting one or two stars under the entry summary
  • Edit the Notes section in Profile & Settings — there's a dedicated space to correct names
  • Need more help? Tap the three dots and select "Send Feedback"

If your AI-generated summary doesn't capture important details:

  • Edit the snapshot and add what's missing
  • Rate the entry to flag the issue
  • Need more help? Tap the three dots and select "Send Feedback"

This is called AI hallucination — AI models sometimes generate details that weren't in your original entry. It's an industry-wide limitation we're actively working to reduce.

If you notice inaccuracies, edit the snapshot or provide feedback to help us improve accuracy over time.

Got a new phone? Here's how to bring your journal with you:

  1. Turn on Tellself Cloud Backup on your old device, then tap "Force Backup"
  2. Use the same login method on your new device
  3. Enable Tellself Cloud Backup on the new device, then tap "Restore Backup"
  4. Check your entries to confirm everything synced correctly
  5. Once verified, you can safely remove the app from your old device

Transferring between Android and iOS is only possible with Tellself Cloud Backup (which we recommend).

Two main reasons we've chosen not to include a chat feature:

  • Clarity over conversations: We give you ready-to-go themes and charts covering relationships, stress, productivity, and more — far more value than prompting you to ask the right questions
  • Privacy first: We don't store your journal on our servers, which keeps your data private and secure — a chat feature would require it

We're always experimenting, and if we find a way to offer a smart, private chat experience, we'll explore it.

To experience the full depth of personalized insights, two things matter:

  • Journal consistently — you need enough entries to reveal patterns
  • Write with detail — descriptive, varied entries lead to richer insights

With fewer than 10 entries, suggestions will naturally be limited. The more you share, the more meaningful the reflections become.

You can always give feedback on any suggestion via the three-dot menu.

We use this app every single day and genuinely love building it. We test every idea ourselves and listen closely to your feedback — most of it makes it into the app.

Our beta channel sometimes gets two updates in a day. We try to pace main channel releases, but with so many improvements happening weekly, we sometimes can't wait.

While Tellself provides valuable support for self-reflection and emotional awareness, it is not a replacement for professional therapy. If you're navigating serious mental health challenges, please reach out to a qualified healthcare professional.

We believe everyone should be able to delete their account quickly and without friction — no reason required.

Go to Settings → Account → "Delete account" and follow the instructions.

Warning: this permanently deletes your account and cannot be undone.

Best practices

Tips from a user with 300+ entries:

  1. Habit matters most — journal every day, ideally before sleep. The fresher the day, the more emotion and detail you'll capture
  2. Just start — don't overthink it. Open the app and begin recording
  3. Breaks are harder than they look — stopping for a week or more makes it genuinely difficult to restart
  4. Forget perfection — focus on the habit. Record, check insights, move on
  5. Find your rhythm — 4–8 minutes daily, check the dashboard every few days, read longer reports weekly
  6. Be descriptive — the more detail you give, the richer your insights become

Subscription & payments

Yes. Our mission is to help everyone reflect on life, and that means keeping the core free. The free version includes:

  • Journal entries with AI insights — same quality as premium
  • Cloud backups
  • Themes and export

You can stay on free forever — no pressure. Advanced reports require more processing power, which is what the subscription supports. If you subscribe, we're genuinely grateful.

Running meaningful, personalized AI insights comes with real costs. Unlike most journal apps that only store text, we continuously analyze your entries — and that requires ongoing resources.

We're doing our best to keep as much free as possible while keeping the app sustainable. Dark mode, cloud backups, and themes? Free. Many apps charge for those.

Every journal entry you create gets processed by advanced AI models — summaries, insights, analytics. These services require ongoing compute power that can't be covered by a one-time purchase.

A subscription lets us sustain the recurring AI processing costs that happen with every new entry you create.

We're sorry — this is rare (around 1% of purchases) but we know it's frustrating when it happens.

Go to the Help section inside the app, tap "Subscription problem," and follow the steps provided. If that doesn't resolve it, reach out at support@tellself.com — we treat these as top priority and aim to fix them as fast as possible.

To apply your coupon:

  1. Open the app and go to the "You" tab (bottom navigation)
  2. Tap "Join TellMeMore" and scroll to the bottom
  3. Tap "Join," choose a payment method, and select "Redeem code"

Important: After redeeming a coupon for free days, it automatically converts to a paid subscription once the free period ends. If you only want to test premium features, cancel immediately after applying the coupon.

Short answer: only for new subscribers.

If you're already a member, your price stays locked in for as long as you keep your subscription active. No surprise increases.

Privacy & security

No — because it's stored only on your device. Here's exactly how it works:

  • When you record, your entry is packaged with recent context
  • It's temporarily uploaded to our servers for AI processing
  • The AI generates your insights and returns them to you
  • Your data is never stored — it disappears from our servers within minutes

Every transfer is fully encrypted. We built this app for ourselves, and we built it the way we'd want it.

No. We don't store journals — which means we simply don't have your data to train on.

When we use third-party AI tools, we only use open-source or enterprise-grade models that explicitly forbid training on user data.

We improve AI quality through anonymous ratings, not your journal content.

This is architecturally impossible. Each journal is processed completely separately — your data never touches anyone else's.

What you might be experiencing is AI hallucination: the AI misinterprets language patterns and generates unexpected details. It's a limitation of current AI models, not a data leak.

  • If it appears in insights, recording the next day usually self-corrects it
  • Ensure your transcripts are clear and detailed

Want to protect your journal with a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID? Go to Settings → "App lock" and follow the instructions. Nobody reads what isn't theirs to read.

Backup & restore

We strongly recommend Tellself Cloud — it's more reliable, works across both Android and iOS, and gives you full control of your data.

Use Google Drive only as a last resort. Some users have reported issues with their Drive storage, and since it's your personal space, we can't help if something goes wrong there.

No. Your journal lives only on your device. If you lose your phone without a backup enabled, we have no way to recover it — there are no server logs, no copies, nothing.

The only exception is Cloud Backup — and it's free, secure, and private. Please enable it now if you haven't already.

Short answer: no — and neither can we. Only the Tellself app can access it for restoration.

The backup is stored in your Google Drive, but it's not readable by you or other apps — it can only be used by Tellself to restore your journal.

To check if a backup exists: Google Drive → Settings → Manage apps.

Warning: if you delete it from there, it's gone permanently. Be careful.
